Beginning in one of the newest and best design hotels of the Portuguese capital, located in historical Lisbon where the Discovery started, just over the river Tagus and near to the iconic Belém Tower, first stage will lead you first to Cascais along the road by the waterfront – first following the river, then where it meets the sea and finally along the Atlantic Ocean itself.
Cascais, whose settlement began in the 12th century, is for ages one of the most famous and appreciated tourist destinations in Portugal and one of the best places to live in the Lisbon region. Beside its humble origins, soon its mild climate and beautiful beaches made of Cascais a unique place, where tradition (most of its monumental patrimony is due to the coastal defence) meets modernity, being considered nowadays one of the most elegant and luxury villages in Portugal, where many of the most notable Portuguese citizens choose to live.
Next stop will be an UNESCO’s World Heritage Site – the beautiful Sintra Mountains, anciently known as Lunae Mons (mountains of the moon) and full of paranormal myths and events. Here is possible to find an extremely reach flora, superb landscapes and exciting roads, some of them used in the glory days of the Portuguese Rally in the 1980’s.
Sintra will be followed by the beaches of the west region and its traditional fishing villages, the perfect opportunity to eat fresh fish made in the best Portuguese way – examples of this are Azenhas do Mar, Ericeira, Vimeiro or Peniche. Baleal is a unique place by itself due to the existence of a peninsula with two beaches at the eyesight of eachother; the same applies to Praia D’El Rey, one of the new preferred golf destinations in Portugal with its courses located near the shore.
The day will end at Óbidos, the land of chocolate (every year a fair entirely dedicated to it takes place here) and of “Ginginha”, a famous liqueur made by infusing ginja berries (sour cherry) in alcohol and adding sugar and other ingredients, usually served in a shot with a piece of the fruit in the bottom – undoubtedly a must taste!

Second stay starts with something really unique: the salt fields of Fonte da Bica, located in the base of a… mountain. Known since the 12th century, this salt fields explore a saline spring located many miles from the sea and whose waters are seven times more salt than sea water!
Serra dos Candeeiros follows in the journey – located near the seashore, is known by its big wind farm and great roads to drive in. Roads that will lead to Almourol, a village dominated by its medieval castle built in a small islet placed 18 meters above Tagus River. Afterwards will be time to head to Lisbon again along the margin of Tagus River, a superb opportunity to look at the art of fishing made in an ancient way and with traditional boats, as well as to know the characteristic “Palafitas” – stilt houses raised on piles over the surface of body of water as a protection against flooding.
Next stop will be the northwest plains of Santarém region. Salvaterra de Magos is a village whose one of the richest patrimony is horse breading; Alcochete is probably the village near Lisbon with biggest traditions in bullfighting. The tour will enter Lisbon through Vasco da Gama Bridge (built by the time of the Expo ’98 world exhibition) a trace of modernity that opposes to the historical downtown of the Portuguese capital, almost totally rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755. Finally, will be time to reach the hotel again and take a rest from a journey that promises to be unforgettable.
